As an important part of nutrition, we are proud to present our Recipes section as a place where you can find out interesting information on food ingredients, great recipes you can prepare for your friends and family, and how these recipes relate to nutrition in the larger sense.

"When preparing recipes, it's fascinating to know that there are many ways to accomplish the same thing," says James Dunleavy, Administrative Director of Rehabilitation Services. "You could prepare a dish that is high in fat, moderate in fat or low in fat, depending on your use of certain ingredients. Knowing what you can substitute, and when, is the key to being able to prepare and serve meals to your family that are healthy, tasty, and aren't harmful to them in terms of excessive fat, sugar or other harmful ingredients."

To this end, our Food and Nutrition staff works diligently to make sure patients get meals that are healthy, balanced and provide patients with choice. "Just about everyone has been a patient in a hospital at one time or another," says Andrew Chavez, Patient Services Manager, "so we know what it's like to be on the receiving end of the process. We want our patients to feel satisfied about their meals and the choices we provide for them on a daily basis."

As far as meeting the needs of people with special diet requirements, Trinitas goes to great lengths to offer meals to patients who adhere to kosher diets, vegetarian diets, cardiac diets, renal diets, diabetic diets and more.

When patients come to Trinitas, we provide great medical care, but we also provide nutritional counseling in a great number of cases. In fact, patients who want nutritional counseling can request it from any nurse at any time and we'll make the necessary arrangements to have someone visit you at your bedside.

The connection between diet and disease is well established. If you have diabetes, and you're eating chocolate cake every day, you may be putting yourself at great risk for a whole host of problems. If you're eating whole eggs seven days a week, you may be putting yourself at risk for a stroke or a heart attack. The choices you make on a daily basis can have a tremendous impact on your health in the future.

Feel free to print these recipes, share them with your friends, and let us know if you like them or not. Have you found other ingredients that work for you as well? By sharing your thoughts, others can benefit.

FACT: Trinitas serves approximately 2,673 meals per day to patients, which translates to almost one million meals per year! (975,645 to be exact!)
