Horan To Receive Edward J. Ill Award

Trinitas President/CEO recognized as Outstanding Healthcare Executive

MD Advantage Insurance Company’s 2019 Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine awards program named Trinitas Regional Medical Center’s CEO Gary S. Horan as the recipient of the Outstanding Healthcare Executive Award. Horan, a resident of Sea Girt, has been the chief executive of Trinitas since July 2001. He is one of New Jersey’s longest-serving hospital CEOs.

According to a press release issued by MD Advantage, “Mr. Horan is being honored for his outstanding career of service to the advancement of excellence in healthcare administration.”

Honoring New Jersey healthcare providers since 1939, the Excellence in Medicine Awards are among the highest honors presented to New Jersey’s medical community. A total of seven individuals will be awarded, representing New Jersey’s top medical educators, executives, physicians and other health leaders.

The Excellence in Medicine Awards are named after Edward J. Ill, MD, a New Jersey physician who was a pioneer in promoting medical education in ways that set the national standard. The awards pay tribute to New Jersey's physicians, healthcare professionals and community leaders who exemplify outstanding competence, leadership and dedication to their profession.

“We are just thrilled that Gary is the recipient of this prestigious award,” noted Sister Rosemary Moynihan, Chairperson of the Board of Trinitas. “Healthcare management has been Gary’s passion for 48 years, and in that time he has compiled an outstanding list of accomplishments.” She noted that, in just the last two years, Trinitas has, under Horan’s leadership, built an ambulatory surgery center, constructed a comprehensive breast center (Connie Dwyer Breast Center at Trinitas), and completed an $18.7 million renovation of the Emergency Department. “The Trinitas Board fittingly named this new facility the Gary S. Horan Emergency Department. Gary has a deep and profound commitment to the Mission of Trinitas and to the broad Elizabeth Community, particularly those who are most in need. The impact he has had on our community is a profound and lasting one,” she added.

Prior to his service at Trinitas, Horan was the President and CEO of Our Lady of Mercy Healthcare System, Bronx, New York. He has held senior leadership positions at New York University Medical Center, St. Vincent’s Medical Center of Richmond, St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center of New York, and JFK Medical Center in Edison, NJ.

The 2019 awards will be presented at the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards ceremony on May 1 at Park Chateau Estate and Gardens in East Brunswick, NJ. For more information visit
